Friday Harbor

For Dan's birthday we went for a day of whale watching in the San Juan Islands. We toured the coast for a few hours before we arrived at Friday Harbor. It was great to see the beautiful places we live so close to.
Once we arrived in Friday Harbor it was just a few minutes before we saw some whales.

There are a few whale pictures and I'm sure most of you don't care, but it's fun for Dan and I to remember so I'm posting them anyway ;)

This whale (above) is Ruffles. He is 60 years old. And very big. He is the son of Granny--the 100 year old whale who is the leader of the J-pod. There are 3 resident pods that live year round in the waters off the San Juan Islands. We saw two pods one our watch.

After a great morning of whale watching we returned to Friday Harbor for an afternoon of tourism. Friday Harbor is the largest inhabited city in the San Juan Islands. It has 2,000 permanent residents. It was such a quaint little town and we had some delicious fish and chips at a restaurant on the harbor.

On our boat ride back to Seattle we saw a bald eagle nest (above). The birds weren't at home, but it was really cool to see their gigantic nest in the wild.

We had such a fun day. Happy Birthday Dan! And thanks Grandma and Grandpa!

So glad you got to go on such a beautiful day and it was fun to be with your girls while you were gone. I love the whale photos and that is something Ron and I are going to do one summer when we are up there-I can't wait.
